Transforming our homes into not just a dwelling space but a feel-good experience involves connecting with nature. Nature-inspired designs bring not only aesthetics but also health and sustainability to our homes. Alfemo's natural wood furniture collection combines the unique texture of solid wood with modern lines, adding warmth and elegance to your living spaces.
“Natural” or “solid” wood refers to raw material processed in one piece without disrupting the fiber integrity of the wood. Unlike veneer products, the entire surface of solid wood consists of the same type of wood, giving each piece its characteristic grain structure and color.
Natural Color and Grain Variation: Due to mineral density, growth rings, and growth conditions, tone differences and different grain patterns can be seen even within the same species of tree. This variability is the authentic character of natural wood; it's a signature from nature, not a product defect.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) summarizes the air quality in indoor environments by rating pollutants between 0-500 with a single number. 0-50 'good', 51-100 is considered 'moderate'. As the value increases, health risk also increases.
Solvent-based varnishes or adhesives with high formaldehyde content can push the AQI above 100. Alfemo aims to keep their products at an AQI < 50 level by using water-based, low-emission finishes and natural oils. This creates a cleaner, fresher living space, especially for children, allergy-prone individuals, and pets.
Alfemo’s solid furniture is not only aesthetic but also an environmentally-friendly choice. A large portion of the wood we use is FSC® certified. Uncertified parts are sourced from controlled forests approved by authorized institutions, ensuring continuity of forest ecosystems and transparency in our supply chain. Solid wood, as a “living” material, continues to store carbon absorbed from the atmosphere and leaves a much smaller carbon footprint compared to plastic-based furniture.
Thanks to their durability, our products provide a sustainable alternative to the disposable culture. Rather than discarding them when broken, they can be repaired, refinished, and passed down through generations. This approach significantly reduces raw material consumption and waste volume while contributing to the circular economy.
By using water-based, low-emission oils and finishes in production, we reduce our carbon footprint and minimize environmental impacts throughout the product lifecycle. We prefer recyclable cardboard and 80% recycled inner fill materials in packaging to reduce plastic usage, thus further lowering our greenhouse gas emissions.
In short, choosing Alfemo’s natural wood furniture not only provides you with a long-lasting and healthy product but also supports a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle, taking a tangible step towards a more livable world for our future.
Aligned with circular economy principles throughout the stages of production and supply chain, Alfemo's repairable designs extend the lifespan of materials, thereby reducing raw material demand and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Even at the end of the product lifecycle, the recyclability of wooden components ensures long-term carbon storage.
By selecting water-based paints and low-emission adhesives in our production processes, we reduce volatile chemical emissions and wastewater pollution to a minimum. To enhance our facility’s energy efficiency, we continually improve our operational carbon footprint through Energy Efficiency Projects (EEP) under our energy management system, contributing to the fight against the climate crisis.
This holistic approach aims to position Alfemo as a leader in the sustainable furniture sector by integrating climate-friendly production, emission management, and water resource conservation.
Will my natural wood furniture change color over time? Wood may transition to a warmer tone upon interaction with light and oxygen; this is a natural patina.
Why are there tone differences in wooden legs?
Wooden legs, made from individually selected tree parts, exhibit light-dark tone variations based on grain density, mineral content, and drying process. Even between parts from different cuts of the same tree, noticeable tone differences can appear. This natural variation is indicative of the unique character of solid wood; it's not a product defect but a feature that makes each piece of furniture unique.
Can I use natural wood furniture in humid climates? Yes, but it’s recommended to keep indoor humidity below 60%.
Is it suitable for homes with children? Solid wood is sturdy. Minor surface scratches can be easily removed with simple sanding and oiling.
